Bone Dry Roofing Sarasota is pleased to introduce the winner of our 2021 Veteran Roof Giveaway, retired U.S. Army Captain Mary Hoffman!
Mary Hoffman, of Sarasota, FL, was nominated by her son, Cody, to receive a new roof, courtesy of Bone Dry and our partners at Owens Corning.
Mary was born and raised in Sarasota, and grew up with family members who served in the military. Mary’s dream was to become a high school English teacher (she was quite a bookworm!), which she knew would require a college degree.
“Being one of nine children, I also knew that it was going to be up to me to find a way to pay for college. I had two older brothers who were in JROTC at Riverview High School before I entered 9th grade and my mom really wanted me to join as well,” Mary said. “I applied myself in school, excelled in JROTC and before my senior year of high school I became aware of a scholarship opportunity for cadets.”
Mary applied and received a full, four-year scholarship to the University of Tampa. She continued to participate in ROTC, and served in various leadership roles throughout her college career. Mary went on to serve at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in Indiana (before the 1991 Base Realignment and Closure), Ft. Steward in Hinesville, GA during Operation Desert Shield/Storm, and finished her military career at the 3220th US Army Garrison in West Palm Beach, FL.
“I was happy to serve as a thank you for the Army investing in me and because I am proud of the freedoms given to me as an American,” Mary said.
Mary raised her son, Cody, in her Sarasota home. She also took care of her elderly parents until their passing. The original roof, installed in 1997, was damaged in 2017 during Hurricane Irma, and although many people encouraged Mary to file an insurance claim for her 20 year old roof, she refused. Others in the community had suffered greater damages during the storm, whereas Mary’s home had only lost a few shingles and was not leaking.
“I was thankful that we weren’t hit as badly as other areas and knew my roof still had some life in it,” said Mary.
Three years later, in May of 2020, Mary noticed a water spot on her ceiling, which she had patched. Shortly thereafter, another spot appeared on the west side of the roof, which again was temporarily repaired to prevent further damage. Mary knew at this time, the 20 year old, original roof was on its last legs.
After opening our office in Sarasota, FL, in May 2021, Bone Dry began our search for a military veteran in the community to receive a new roof. We received many nominations, one of which was from Mary’s son, Cody. His nomination read, in part,
“As is the story with any house, the roof needs to be replaced and my Mom’s roof is on its last legs. It is still the original roof from 1997 and has been patched a few times now and is in desperate need of replacing. This nomination comes from a place of love for my Mom who diligently served the country that I call home and who fought for the freedom’s that all Americans get to enjoy.”
After reviewing and deliberating on our nominations, Bone Dry chose Mary as our recipient for the 2021 Veteran Roof Giveaway. In August, Bone Dry Roofing General Manager, Jeff Dalverny, surprised Mary and her family with the presentation of the new roof.
“I am fortunate to represent a company that gives back to the communities we serve, and surprising Mary and announcing to her that she was getting a new roof was quite an experience!” said Jeff. “Bone Dry thanks Mary for her service and is excited to give her back her peace of mind. Gifting Mary a new roof means a lot to us.”
At first, Mary thought Jeff was a solicitor, but quickly realized there was something else going on. After hearing Jeff say that she’d be getting a new roof courtesy of Bone Dry, her reaction was emotional.
“I was completely overwhelmed and shed a lot of tears of pure joy and gratitude! I think I said it was an answer to prayer as I had been praying daily for a new roof since Hurricane Irma!”
As an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor, Bone Dry Roofing installed a new roof on Mary’s home, using Owens Corning Duration shingles.
Thank you, Mary, for your selfless dedication to your country and family. Congratulations on your new roof!
